DESCRIPTION:NOT JUST A HISTORICAL EVENT\n\n\n\nSince December 1\, 2021\n\n\n\n46 Ontario women and children have been killed\n\n\n\nby the men they knew\n\n\n\nSee this link to a recent article published in the Lindsay Advocate\, November 2022 \n\n\n\nLindsay Advocate Women Abuse Prevention Month Article November 2022 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn December 6\, 1989 Marc Lépine entered a mechanical engineering class at the École Polytechnique and ordered the women and men to opposite sides of the classroom. He separated nine women\, instructing the men to leave. He stated that he was “fighting feminism” and opened fire. He shot at all nine women in the room\, killing six. The shooter then moved through corridors\, the cafeteria\, and another classroom\, targeting women for just under 20 minutes. He killed a further eight before turning the gun on himself. DESCRIPTION:Women’s Resources is pleased to host an annual Marquee event as one of our main fundraisers. Bringing top rate performers to our local community is one way to say thank you to our generous supporters and donors. \n\n\n\nThe Marquee Event brings excitement and energy to the community and has raised considerable funds (over $120\,000) for Women’s Resources. \n\n\n\nSince we began this fundraiser in 2011\, we have never looked back… \n\n\n\nOur first Marquee was with Arlene Dickinson on International Women’s Day in 2011. The local businesses and media embraced the event with generous sponsorship. The community responded and the show sold out. \n\n\n\nSince then performers for the Marquee have included Rick Mercer\, Chantal Kreviazuk\, The Jim Cuddy Band\, Jann Arden and Buffy Sainte Marie\, Blue Rodeo and Serena Ryder. To be eligible women must live or work in the City of Kawartha Lakes. \n\n\n\n\n\nWHEN & WHY\n\n\n\nThe awards presentation takes place in October\, Women’s History Month\, a time to celebrate the accomplishments of women. To celebrate Women’s History Month\, we would like to recognize those women in the Kawartha Lakes area that have made their mark in history. \n\n\n\n\n\nTHE EVENT\n\n\n\nThe celebratory event includes a dinner followed by the presentation of the Extraordinary Women of Kawartha Lakes Awards.  As this is one of Women’s Resources main fundraising events\, there will be lots of fun fundraising activities throughout the evening. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMore about the Awards\n\n\n\nTo be nominated for one of the six awards the Nominee must: \n\n\n\n\nbe 18 years of age or older\n\n\n\nbe a resident of CKL\n\n\n\nif employed\, must work in CKL as her primary location\n\n\n\nmust agree to the nomination\n\n\n\n\nThe nomination must also include: \n\n\n\n\ntwo references (not family members)\n\n\n\n\nNominees may only be nominated in one category. \n\n\n\nNominators may be indivudals\, associations\, businesses\, churches\, service clubs or not for profit organizations. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEXTRAORDINARY COMMUNICATOR\n\n\n\nNominee has raised public awareness about issues and needs in CKL. She is a woman who is able to convey\, express\, or exchange information to motivate others. She may communicate her message through visual\, literary media\, architectural\, counselling or performing arts. Her message(s) have made a significant and substantial difference in CKL.   \n\n\n\nFULL AWARD DESCRIPTION \n\n\n\n\n\nEXTRAORDINARY VOLUNTEER\n\n\n\nNominee who voluntarily offers herself for a service or undertaking in CKL. She is a person who performs her service willingly for no financial gain in return\, putting in the time\, effort and commitment to help and improve the quality of a person’s life or situation or a cause that she is passionate about.
